Holidays Around the World Culture Program-December 20, 2010

We learned how children in countries around the world celebrate the holidays. We had a great time playing games, activities, and dressing in some beautiful multicultural clothing! What a wonderful experience!

It's so hard to believe that our year is half over! I guess time flies when you are having fun, and I enjoy every single day with my class! They are such a wonderful group of children and I consider myself very blessed to have the opportunity to work with them. I really enjoyed the Gingerbread projects and hope you enjoyed making them with your child. Be sure to watch the slideshow we made with them. I hope everyone has a restful and joyful break and is ready to return in 2011. May all of your families have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We had so much fun sharing our Gingerbread projects! They were adorable!

Where does pizza come from?

On Friday, Mr. Martin and his 5th grade class invited 2nd graders to learn about how pizza is made! We learned that all the ingredients from the grain to make the dough, to the tomatoes and herbs for the sauce, to the vegetables for the toppings , come from a garden. Many of those crops are growing in Wiseman's own garden, which we toured on Thursday afternoon! Mr. Martin gave a fine demonstration of how to make spaghetti sauce from scratch and we even got a chance to sample a yummy homemade pizza! Then we got to take home a collection of seeds to start our own garden. Thanks Mr. Martin and class for a great learning experience!

Wiseman 2nd Graders meet Gilly, a working police dog!

We had the opportunity to meet Chief West, Officer Isenberg, and his canine partner, Gilly from the Portland Police Department today! Gilly showed off some of her talents, and we learned a lot about how dogs can help people. This reinforces our theme of the week..Animals who help us, and our reading story about Tara and Tyree.

Learning about the desert!

We celebrated the end of our week-long study of the desert by tasting some candy made from the juice of the prickly-pear fruit. We learned that this fruit grows on cactus from the deserts of the American Southwest. Our class was very interested to learn about plants and animals that are found in the desert!

Summer 2010

It's been a very busy summer! My family has enjoyed camping and swimming together. My daughters have had a great time at Vacation Bible School and soccer camp. My lab, Duchess, had eight adorable puppies a couple of weeks ago, and we have had fun playing with them. It's hard to believe that a new school year is about to begin, but I am excited and ready to go!
