Holidays Around the World Culture Program

We had a wonderful learning experience at our Culture Program on December 19th. The students told me their favorite part was getting to dress in clothing from countries around the world! Don't they look adorable?

A Tasty End to our Desert Unit!

We wrapped up our study of deserts by tasting some Prickly Pear Fruit candy! Most of the class thought it was delicious...others, a little too sour! Either way, we learned a lot about the desert's climate, plants, and animals and had fun with science this week!

Stations are Up and Running!

James and Katie pose for a picture with Disney princesses and Barbie from PHS Drama Team's "Living Wax Museum"! We loved the show!

Wisekids Information

I just wanted to share with parents that our Wisekids Afterschool Program here at Wiseman still has a few openings for afterschool child care. It is a very good program that provides the children with a healthy snack, homework assistance, creative art projects, and exercise and playtime on either the playground or gym. If you are in need of afterschool child care, it is a program that is affordable, and that both of my own children have attended and enjoyed.

Fluency Folders

I hope that the Fluency Folders will be a helpful tool in building your child's confidence in reading this year. Just a reminder that they will come home each Monday and be returned to school by Thursday of the same week. I ask that you have your child read the 100 words and the reading passage for the recommended timing, but feel free to practice with your child each night if you wish. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Parent Conferences are September 6th. Look for the sign up schedule to come home this Friday or early next week and return as soon as possible for the best chance at getting the time slot that you prefer. If you are unable to come to conferences that day, I will work with you to schedule at another time.

Parent Night

I really appreciate all of you who attended Parent Night last night! We had a great turn-out! It was good to see all of you again and to see some new faces! I hope the information was helpful. Remember to look for Fluency Folders to come home on Monday next week. They will need to be returned by Thursday. Just let me know if any questions arise.
We plan to begin work stations next week, so ask your child about them and look back at our blog to see pictures of our class in action! Have a great rest of the week.

A new school year is almost here!

Wow! How summer flies by! My family has been very busy this summer and has made some great memories. We visited family, went camping, took a trip to Mexico, and toured Lost River Cave! My two daughters enjoyed swimming, catching lightning bugs, making crafts, watching movies, riding their bikes, and playing outside until dark almost every night. It is so nice to slow down and enjoy the company of your family and friends over the summer!
It is also exciting to start a new school year. My girls are anxious to get back to J.W. Wiseman! They will be in 1st and 3rd grade this year, and I will begin my 13th year of teaching. I always look forward to meeting my new group of second graders and parents! I have many exciting learning activities planned for this year, so enjoy the rest of your summer and get ready for a great year! See you soon!

Summer is here!

As our year comes to an end, I want to tell my students and parents what a wonderful, blessed year I have had. I have enjoyed every minute of this school year and will miss each of my students dearly! We had a GREAT time on Field Day yesterday! The weather was perfect, and the kids did really well during events and stations.
On Monday, each child is allowed to bring a game or two to share, a towel, a pillow, and a few favorite books to read.
On Tuesday, we will have 2nd Grade Awards in the auditorium beginning at 8:30. That afternoon, we will have a Snack Party outside at 1:30.
Wednesday, the 25th, is our last day of school. We will have movies and popcorn. Your child may bring their favorite (school-appropriate) movie to share that day.

Report cards will be mailed on Friday, May 27th.

Have a safe and wonderful summer! Keep in touch!

Goodbye and Good Luck Painted Lady Butterflies!

After many week of caring for our caterpillars/butterflies, we finally got a short break from the rain and released them on Tuesday! We wrote "well-wishes" letters to Bella, Samantha, Lucy, Daphne, Cheetah, and Jo-Jo, our beautiful butterflies, before sending them on their way.

Read Across America Activities

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd with some great reading activites! Mrs. Bergman's 5th graders came, dressed as their vocabulary word, and shared books with us. Two students were selected to read on Portland's radio station 95.9 and we had some very Suess-like characters on parade. What a fun day we had celebrating our love for reading!

Snow Days...
My daughters have enjoyed their time off from school, and I'm sure my students have also! However, skills can become a bit rusty during this time away from school. We have made a few trips to the public library, and have been practicing reading a little each day. I decided to send home some "Snow Day" assignments and a story writing project to begin. Stories should be written by the students with parents only helping from the sidelines. They should be on a topic that is well-known to your child, such as a trip, or an exciting or meaningful personal experience. They need not be perfect, as we will edit and revise at school. Just a rough draft is all I expect. These are due on Fri. Jan. 28th. Have a great long weekend!

Welcome back!

It has been a challenge to get back into our routine with all the snow days, but we have accomplished much in just a few days! We will share our January "Family Dream" projects on Monday, Jan. 24th. February's family project is to design a Valentine box for our Valentine exchange during our party on Feb. 14th. I would like to have these turned in by Feb. 11th. The students will need to bring in Valentine cards for 16 students. Any parents interested in helping with snacks or stations, please let me know.
